5 Book Buying Hacks

Books can be an expensive passion. At the beginning of COVID-19, I dedicated my newfound free time to reading–free time previously spent commuting to work or looking presentable enough for work. You may ask, has your appearance for work via Zoom diminished? Yes, of course, but that is the price I pay to read. Goodbye workplace chic, and hello dowdy bookworm. This is me now!

I began reading approximately 10 books monthly in quarantine. If you multiply that by the average cost for a book–let’s say $20–then I have myself a $200 per month habit AT LEAST. If only I could be as passionate about running as books, but alas. I (and my bank account) quickly realized I needed to get creative. Now that we’re almost a year into the pandemic, I’ve found ways to work the book system along the way while still reading what I want. I’m here to share these hacks with you, dear friend.

However, I will underline there’s value in cultivating your own library of great reads. If you love a book even after you’ve borrowed it from the library, consider purchasing it! I did this recently with Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb. After borrowing the book, I knew I needed my own copy to read as needed down the line and pass it along to friends who may need it, too!

With that said, happy hacking and happy reading!

  1. Get a damn library card already!
